Welcome to Delta Quilters Guild
The Delta Quilters guild is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, in Contra Costa County. Founded in 1982, the guild has grown over the years to over 100 members. Delta Quilters' primary mission is charity, with members making dozens of donation quilts each year that are donated to local hospital neo-natal care units, foster care agencies, and other groups. We use donated fabric, batting, and other materials for our charity quilts graciously given to us by local quilt shops, textile manufacturers, members and friends. Last year, we began participating in the Quilts of Honor program, a national organization providing quilts to returning soldiers from Iran and Afghanistan. We also donate money and supplies to local charities in our community.
The second aim of our organization is to promote the art of quilting through education and exhibition. The guild holds monthly workshops for members on a variety of classic techniques such as applique and foundation piecing, as well as fun projects such as T-Shirt quilts and fabric dyeing. Monthly workshops are inexpensive and are one of the most valuable benefits of guild membership.
To promote the art of quilting, the guild presents a Quilt Show approximately once per year. The shows are large, with over 200 quilts, accessories, and wearable art items on display. Everyone in the guild gets involved in some way, and it's a lot of fun. Our members are very talented and productive, filling each show with high quality work. It's a festive atmosphere with many people visiting the show to see the quilts and shop in the vendor booths. Our shows also feature work by children and young adults as we encourage the next generation to use quilting to express their creativity and perspective. See the Quilt Show page for information on our next quilt show in September 2014.
The Delta Quilters guild also has exciting events during the year including the annual Challenge Project competition each Spring. Entries are anonymously submitted and the members vote for the winning entries during the meeting in a mini-quilt show format. The ballots are then quickly tallied by the Challenge Team, and the winners immediately announced and awarded prizes. It's a fun event, and one of most-attended meetings of the year. Quilt shops from around the Bay Area as well as several manufacturers donated products, services, and fabric for prizes. Each winner received a gift basket stuffed with quilting goodies for their efforts.
In the spring, the guild holds its annual retreat. In reality, it's a non-stop sewing party with fun projects, plenty of food and snacks to keep one's sewing energy up, and lots of laughs. We sew as much or as little as we like, and enjoy getting away to relax, catch up, and have fun. And, maybe finally finish one of those UFOs (unfinished objects.)
During the remaining months of the year we have a variety of speakers give presentations of their work, including nationally known quilt artists such as Alex Andersen. We also host a holiday party in December, with a delicious potluck dinner. In April we'll have another party, the New Member Celebration, to welcome our newest members and spend time networking with the group.
If you enjoy quilting and want to meet new friends who share your passion, join us!
